Find the Right Gel or Ointment for Your Eyes

Not all dry eye treatments are designed for daytime use. Gels and ointments are thicker formulations that provide longer-lasting relief, especially when standard drops aren’t enough or when symptoms are worse at night.

These products work by forming a protective layer over the eye surface, helping to lock in moisture, reduce evaporation, and support healing while your eyes are at rest.

Mild to Moderate Dryness That Needs Longer Relief

Lubricating Gels:
These are thicker than standard eye drops and provide extended hydration without needing to reapply as often. They’re ideal for people who find drops wear off too quickly or need more sustained comfort throughout the day or evening. Some high-strength hyaluronic acid drops also fall into this category, offering a gel-like or serum consistency with longer retention on the eye.

Recommended products:

Irritated, Inflamed, or Blepharitis-Related Dry Eye

Manuka-Based Gels and Creams:
These go beyond simple lubrication by helping to reduce inflammation and support the natural healing of the surface and eyelids. They’re particularly useful for blepharitis, eyelid irritation, and more persistent dry eye symptoms.

Recommended products:

Severe or Night-Time Dryness

Eye Ointments:
Ointments are the thickest option and provide the longest-lasting protection. They form a barrier over the eye to prevent moisture loss overnight, making them ideal for use before bed. Vision may be blurred after application, so they are best used at night.

Recommended products:

  • VitA-POS Eye Ointment – contains vitamin A (retinol palmitate) to support the ocular surface and promote healing

When to Choose a Gel or Ointment

  • Your drops don’t last long enough
  • Your eyes feel worse at night or upon waking
  • You need longer-lasting protection between applications
  • You’re managing chronic or more severe dry eye

If you’re unsure which option is right for you, gels are a good step up from drops, while ointments are best reserved for overnight use or more advanced dryness.
